Sotomayor Confirmed........

US Supreme Court Nominee Sonia Sotomayor, in a vote of 63-31, was confirmed by the US Senate to be the first Hispanic woman to sit on the nation's highest court. She'll be sworn in Saturday as the court's 111th justice, third woman and first nominee by a Democrat in 15 years. The 55-year-old daughter of Puerto Rican parents was raised in a South Bronx housing project and educated in the Ivy League before rising to the highest legal echelons, spending the past 17 years as a federal judge.

2 American Reporters Pardoned.........

The official Korean News Agency said early Wednesday from Pyongyang that the order was issued following a request from former President Bill Clinton.

Clinton flew to the North Korean capital on Tuesday on a mission to negotiate the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for former Vice President Al Gore's Current TV media venture.

Post Office In Trouble........

With the federal deficit topping a record $1 trillion in July, 2009, and rapidly on its way to doubling by this fall, the government desperately needs to squeeze out every tax dollar it can find. That could translate into more audits or at least a letter from the IRS politely asking you to refigure your taxes.

The post office is facing a $7 billion loss this year despite a 2-cent rate increase. The agency has shed 150,000 workers since 2000, removed hundreds of mail collection boxes and taken other steps to save money.

Last year, mail volume fell by 9.5 billion pieces to a total of 203 billion pieces. It is expected to fall by 28 billion pieces this year to a total of 175 billion pieces. At the same time population growth and new business mean the post office has to serve 1.2 million new addresses every year.

34 Radio Stations.........

Hugo Chavez has shut down CNB radio station located in Caracas,Venezuela, in an attempt to make Venezuela more democratized. He will be calling for more shut downs of radio stations saying they do not meet FCC rules, to keep the type of public airing of news items under control. The public and station employees are making an outcry against this action, in hope of swaying these decisions. They are calling it a leftist plot to cater the news to the Chavez way of doing things and make him more popular.

LaGuardia Scare......

Passengers walk toward the main terminal at LaGuardia Airport as it reopens after being evacuated Saturday, August 1, 2009 in New York. The airport was evacuated after a man entered the building with a fake bomb in a bag, police said. The device in the man's bag was a few batteries and wires, but it was not dangerous, police said.

The scare was over in a few hours, but it disrupted travel plans for thousands of people as flights were postponed and vehicle traffic to the airport was briefly halted. Delays rippled across the country as well as airlines adjusted their schedules.
